Description

Special Needs School Nurses work with children and young people aged between 2½ - 19 years with special needs including those with learning disabilities, associated additional health needs and/or complex health needs who attend one of the six special schools in Cambridgeshire.

Every child enrolled at each school will have access to a member of the Special Needs School Nursing team throughout their time at the school. The nursing support required by the child will depend on their identified needs.

Pupils are identified to the service by the school, before or on starting at that school. As part of the school’s enrolment process, the school and nurses jointly gather health information to identify the health needs of the children. This information is used by the school nurse to register the child under the Special Needs School Nursing Service on their health system and create any protocols or arrange any training that is required to meet the child’s needs whilst in school.

School staff are able to use the School Nursing Service to ask direct questions about the health needs of a child or provide answers to issues raised by parents or children themselves. This can be achieved by face to face meetings with the school nurse, telephone or by email/letter.

Schools determine which staff require training and the team will train those staff, as appropriate. The school nurse will also ensure that all documentation around the care needs of each child is provided to schools, is up to date and accessible.
