This service offers assessment, advice and treatment for children who have difficulties with speech, language and communication and/or eating and drinking. Therapists work closely with parents/carers, nurseries, playgroups and schools to ensure that children are supported at home and at pre-school or school.

Children are assessed using a combination of observation of playing and talking, listening to their speech and language, and sometimes more formal testing. Children who need treatment may be offered group or individual sessions. Group sessions will usually involve the direct participation of parents/carers; all sessions will involve parents/carers and sometimes pre-school/school teams in following up treatment session at home.
The service works to a target of treatment starting within the 18 weeks.

Children/young people are eligible to access the service if they are registered with a Cambridgeshire GP. The age range is 0 - 16 years or 0 - 19 years for children/young people who have a disability.

Decisions on whether or not children need treatment are made on the basis on their individual strengths and difficulties, and the likely outcome of any intervention.

Parents/carers of pre-school children can see a speech and language therapist in one of the regular drop-in sessions and no formal referral or letter is needed. Details of drop-in sessions can be found on the website above. Referral of school aged children is managed through discussion with the school SENCO or class teacher who will complete the speech and language descriptor profile and a written referral to the service.
